AN OVERVIEW OF OUR WORLD
I. Who was the influential person who ever lived?
Jesus. No question about it.
II. Who was the most influential person
who lived the last millenium, 1000 to 2000 A.D.
In 1999 the A&E cable network showed a series entitled,
Biography of the Millennium: 100 People -- 1000 Years. They interviewed
historians, scholars, politicians, and theologians look ing to identify
the 100 most influential people of the millennium. (Of course Jesus has
been and still continues to be the most influential person who ever lived
at any time in history. I didn't see the series, but the list is interesting.
I think you will find the number 1 most influential person of the last
1000 years especially interesting.) 1 2
Some things are obvious. But it's easy to miss them.
Then they showed it. Bingo. Irrefutable. No possible argument.
The most important person in the last millennium? No contest. The last
1,500 years? Of course. The most important person since Jesus? Yes. The
person who changed the world the most? Yes.
More important than
#10 - Galileo
#9 -- Copernicus
#8 -- Einstein
#7 -- Karl Marx
#6 -- Christopher Columbus
#5 -- Shakespeare
#4 -- Charles Darwin
#3 -- Martin Luther
#2 -- Isaac Newton.
I think you would agree that these were all great thinkers
whose ideas changed (for better or worse) the course of humanity. You may
not have chosen one of these people as worthy of the honor of being in
the top 10, but I think A&E was right in their selection of the one
person who has by his achievements had the greatest impact on the world
this millennium.
Why not make Newton #1? In 1687, his book, the Principia, established
the standards of modern physics. His worldview became dominant: mathematics
as the key to unlocking the secrets of the universe. His book made possible
most of the wonders of modern science. Is anything more important than
this?
Why not make Luther #1? He launched the Reformation, which
re-shaped Northern Europe. His pamphlets changed the minds of millions
of people. He was the greatest pamphleteer -- indeed, the first -- in history.
He translated the Bible into German, which established the highest literary
standards of the nation. What's more important than this?
Why not make Darwin #1? His Origin of Species (1859) sold out
in one day. It established modern man's way of looking at himself and his
society. His theory of evolution through impersonal natural selection replaced
the providence of God as the way of explaining the natural order. His book
destroyed natural law theory. What could be more important?
But the #1 person is unquestionable. The answer is something
way, way more important. I have already told you what it is. It's the common
feature of all three men's achievement. It's a four-letter word. It begins
with the letter B. There was a man behind it.
OK, who was it? A&E's selection for #1 -- Johann Gutenberg.
Gutenberg's invention of the moveable-type printing press in
the mid 15th century changed the world more than any other invention or
event. The goal was to be able to get the word of God to the people. The
Gutenberg Bible was the first book to be printed using this method. What
is amazing is that the printed word still carries so much influence even
in our day almost 500 years later.
Movable type changed the world by lowering the cost of printing,
thereby raising the personal return on an investment in literacy.
Think of a world without books, without newspapers, without
junk mail. It's Unthinkable!
III. Influential Men who Affect our World Today:
-
Darwin, author of Origin of Species, father of today's evolutionary thought
-
Marx, his Communist Manifesto called for no religion and government schools
-
Luther, father of "saved by faith-only"
These 3 very influential men continue to affect our very
lives through 3 disciplines:
-
Science
-
Philosophy
-
Doctrine
IV. Science
The word science appears only two times in the Bible:
DAN 1:3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his
eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of
the king's seed, and of the princes;
4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in
all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science,
and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom
they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
1TI 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust,
avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely
so called: 21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith.
Grace be with thee. Amen.
The scoffers say there was no world-wide flood, and the
world continues unchanged from its beginning.
2PE 3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you;
in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the
holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and
Saviour:
3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers,
walking after their own lusts,
4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers
fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of
the creation.
V. Creation
A. Literal 6-days of creation
There are many in religion, even in the body of Christ,
who believe that the universe is millions of years old, and that life evolved
over many millenia of time. But Moses wrote by the Holy Spirit:
GEN 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called
Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
According to Jewish time, the next day begins at 6PM. Each
day has one evening and one morning, and in that order if you are Jewish.
Moses recorded the giving of the Law in Exodus:
EXO 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy
God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter,
thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that
is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and
all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD
blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
EXO 31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath,
to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for
in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day
he rested, and was refreshed.
B. The Problem of Death
GEN 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened
unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded
thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake;
in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou
shalt eat the herb of the field;
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return
unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art,
and unto dust shalt thou return.
20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother
of all living.
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins,
and clothed them.
GEN 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as
one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand,
and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to
till the ground from whence he was taken.
ROM 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world,
and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have
sinned:
1CO 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in
your sins.
18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most
miserable.
20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits
of them that slept.
21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection
of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Logic tells us, then, that if death came before sin
entered into the world, then resurrection or eternal life would not be
related to removing our sins. So removing our sins would not produce resurrection
and eternal life. Thus would Jesus' death be in vain!
C. Jesus Testifys that Adam was a Real Man
MAT 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read,
that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and
shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
Jesus refers to Moses, who wrote the Genesis account of
the creation and Adam:
MAR 10:2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it
lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.
3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and
to put her away.
5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart
he wrote you this precept.
6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and
female.
7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave
to his wife;
8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain,
but one flesh.
9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
D. The Bible is not Silent about Dinosaurs
When Job recorded his story by the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit, he indicated that the great reptiles were coincident with mankind.
God is saying "Job, take a look at behemoth when he is eating...":
JOB 40:15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth
grass as an ox.
16 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the
navel of his belly.
17 He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones
are wrapped together.
18 His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars
of iron.
19 He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can
make his sword to approach unto him.
20 Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts
of the field play.
21 He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.
22 The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the
brook compass him about.
23 Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that
he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.
24 He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares.
Leviathan the fire-breathing dragon and sea-serpent:
JOB 41:1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook?
or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?
2 Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with
a thorn?
3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words
unto thee?
4 Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant
for ever?
5 Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for
thy maidens?
6 Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among
the merchants?
7 Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish
spears?
8 Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even
at the sight of him?
10 None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand
before me?
11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under
the whole heaven is mine.
12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
13 Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him
with his double bridle?
14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round
about.
15 His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
16 One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
17 They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot
be sundered.
18 By his neesings [ sneezings - RSV ] a light doth shine, and his
eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19 Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.
20 Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or
caldron.
21 His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.
22 In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before
him.
23 The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves;
they cannot be moved.
24 His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the
nether millstone.
25 When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of
breakings they purify themselves.
26 The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the
dart, nor the habergeon.
27 He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
28 The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him
into stubble.
29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.
30 Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon
the mire.
31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a
pot of ointment.
32 He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to
be hoary.
33 Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
34 He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children
of pride.
VI. Philosophy
The word philosophy appears only one time in the Bible:
COL 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy
and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the
world, and not after Christ.
A. The Myth of Neutrality
Many, including some of the houshold of faith, attempt to
place parts of the world and their lives in a neutral zone, devoid of any
guidance by the Word. But Jesus has a very narrow view of this:
MAT 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate
the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise
the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
VII. Reprove Error
On the matters of doctrine, such as faith-only, predestination,
once-saved always-saved, love will cover any minor matters of doctrine,
and other errors, the holy record is plain:
EPH 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and
righteousness and truth;)
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness,
but rather reprove them.
12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of
them in secret.
13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light:
for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the
dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the
Lord is.
Don't keep silent about error; we are to reprove it! This
is very hard to do in this day of politeness, tolerance, and political
correctness. Also, don't gossip about the details of the shameful things
of this world which are done in secret.
2TI 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be
gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if
God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the
truth;
26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil,
who are taken captive by him at his will.
We are not to crush those who are in error, but to be kind,
humble, and patient with them.
2TI 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus
Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his
kingdom;
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove,
rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;
but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having
itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be
turned unto fables.
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of
an evangelist, make full proof of [ fulfil - RSV ] thy ministry.
To reprove, rebuke, and to exhort is a part, a component
of preaching the word.
A. Doctrine
Many in the religious world today ridicule those who take
a stand on doctrine:
MAT 7:28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these
sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
MAT 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth,
and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments
of men.
MAT 16:11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake
it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of
the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the
leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Jesus himself warned his disciples about the false
doctrines of that time.
MAR 12:38 And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware
of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations
in the marketplaces,
39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms
at feasts:
40 Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence
make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.
Jesus' doctrine warned about those who wore the robes. Today
we have 3 types who wear the robes: the false religions of the world, the
scholars who head academia, and the judges of the courts of law.3
From all three of these categories today we hear support for abortion,
homosexuality, and support for the religion of one's own choice.
ACT 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and
fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
ROM 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,
but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered
you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
ROM 16:16 Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches
of Christ salute you.
17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions
and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid
them.
18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their
own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the
simple.
19 For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore
on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good,
and simple concerning evil.
EPH 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up
far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists;
and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry,
for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge
of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature
of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and
carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning
craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things,
which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by
that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in
the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying
of itself in love.
COL 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments
of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to
ordinances,
21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments
and doctrines of men?
23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship [ promoting
rigor of devotion - RSV ], and humility, and neglecting of the body: not
in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
1TI 1:2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy,
and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia,
that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which
minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and
of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they
say, nor whereof they affirm.
8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but
for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for
unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers,
for manslayers,
10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind,
for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any
other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed
to my trust.
1TI 3:14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto
thee shortly:
15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to
behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God,
the pillar and ground of the truth.
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was
manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached
unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times
some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and
doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a
hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which
God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe
and know the truth.
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if
it be received with thanksgiving:
5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou
shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of
faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather
unto godliness.
1TI 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example
of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith,
in purity.
13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy,
with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy
profiting may appear to all.
16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them:
for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
1TI 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy
of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
1TI 6:1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count
their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine
be not blasphemed.
2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them,
because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are
faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and
exhort.
3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words,
even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according
to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes
of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of
the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
Nothing is new under the sun. Those "supposing that gain
is godliness" are today preaching what is called the prosperity gospel.
TIT 1:7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God;
not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given
to filthy lucre;
8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy,
temperate;
9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that
he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the
gainsayers.
10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially
they of the circumcision:
11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching
things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.
TIT 1:12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said,
The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.
13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that theymay
be sound in the faith;
14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that
turn from the truth.
15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled
and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is
defiled.
16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being
abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
2:1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in
charity, in patience.
3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness,
not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands,
to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their
own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine
shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of
the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please
them well in all things; not answering again;
10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may
adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
Paul here is equating sound doctrine as a sound faith, the
faith.
HEB 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for
ever.
9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For
it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats,
which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
2JO 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the
doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine
of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive
him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
JUD 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you
of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort
you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once
[ once for all - RSV ] delivered unto the saints.
Once for all delivered, the faith or the doctrine has been
completed, fixed in its finished form to be taught and obeyed unto salvation.
In the Revelation, Jesus describes to John on the island
of Patmos 3 doctrines he hates: the doctrine of Balaam, of the Nicolaitanes,
and of the Thyatiranes...
REV 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because
thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught
Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things
sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes,
which thing I hate.
16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight
against them with the sword of my mouth.
REV 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee,
because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess,
to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things
sacrificed unto idols.
21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented
not.
22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery
with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall
know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give
unto every one of you according to your works.
24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as
have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan,
as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.
25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.
How, then, do we contend for the faith and remain faithful
to it?
VIII. We have the Sufficiency of Scripture
2TI 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus
shall suffer persecution.
13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving,
and being deceived.
14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast
been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which
are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ
Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto
all good works.
2PE 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the
knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that
pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that
hath called us to glory and virtue:
A. We have the Whole Armor of God
Put on the armor of light:
ROM 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time
to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore
cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness,
not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for
the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
We must live by this armor of righteousness:
2CO 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you
also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day
of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold,
now is the day of salvation.)
3 Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:
4 But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in
much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
5 In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings,
in fastings;
6 By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the
Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
7 By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness
on the right hand and on the left,
8 By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers,
and yet true;
9 As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as
chastened, and not killed;
10 As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich;
as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
EPH 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in
the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand
against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against
spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be
able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having
on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able
to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and
watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
IX. As a Man Thinketh
PRO 23:6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye,
neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink,
saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Be careful what you are thinking about!
A. Thoughts & Acts to Avoid
Watch what you do and say in the unguarded moment, perhaps
during leisure:
EPH 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour,
and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself
for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not
be once named among you, as becometh saints;
4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which
are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous
man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ
and of God.
6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these
things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord:
walk as children of light:
9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness
and truth;)
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness,
but rather reprove them.
12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done
of them in secret.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the
Lord is.
B. Time is Short
Youth is fleeting. I was in your shoes 25 years ago, and
it seems like yesterday:
4
JAM 4:13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will
go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get
gain:
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is
your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then
vanisheth away.
The teacher gives good advice that we all should heed:
ECC 11:9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart
cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart,
and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things
God will bring thee into judgment.
10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from
thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.
12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while
the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I
have no pleasure in them;
2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened,
nor the clouds return after the rain:
3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong
men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few,
and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the
grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all
the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall
be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper
shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long
home, and the mourners go about the streets:
6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken,
or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit
shall return unto God who gave it.
C. Thoughts & Acts for Doing
Here is the really good stuff!!
PHI 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep
your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things
are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever
things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any
virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard,
and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
This scripture is a good test of that new movie, TV show,
paperback book, magazine, or planned outing with friends.
Besides the tests John gives in his epistle for whether
you are in the faith, Peter gives good, progressive advice to the christian
who would make his salvation sure:
2PE 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the
knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that
pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath
called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises:
that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped
the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue;
and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to
patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness
charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that
ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off,
and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling
and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into
the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
