A BIBLE STUDY
"You Have Heard It Said!"
On the Mount
Jesus was teaching the multitudes up on the mountain the beloved Sermon
On The Mount, and when he got to the fundamental conditions of the hearts
of men, he began this teaching saying "Ye have heard that it was said of
them of old time...". After he stated the imperfect command of the Old
Law, he perfected it when he said "But I say unto you...". In the grammer
of the original Greek language of Matthew chapter 5, Jesus emphasizes his
authority: "But I, I say unto you...".
MAT 7:28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings,
the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as
the scribes. [ emph. added ]
After only a few years, false teachers came in and began to lead the
unwary and unstudied into error. The apostle Peter gave warning in his
second epistle to the church.
2PE 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people,
even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring
in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring
upon themselves swift destruction.
2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom
the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise
of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation
slumbereth not.
The truth of Peter's warning can be seen today. Wealthy so-called "evangelists"
on the television and the radio proclaim that God wants you to be healthy,
wealthy, and worry free; which you can be if you will send them a "faith
offering" -- that is, money -- to have them pray for your every wish.
Another kind of dangerous false teacher, is the sincere but scripturally
unsound one who teaches from the damnable doctrines of the denominational
world.
Getting Saved
-
Jesus could well say today, "You have heard it said that for you to be
saved, just pray this sinner's prayer."
Well, Jesus HAS already stated the answer to this false teaching:
MAT 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All
power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded
you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Mark records what will happen to those who do not obey this command
of the teaching:
MAR 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world,
and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that
believeth not shall be damned.
In both Matthew and Mark the meaning of the Greek word for baptize is
to be immersed.
These same words of Jesus are the answer to the following errors:
-
"You have heard it said that for you to be saved, just believe in Jesus."
-
"You have heard it said that for you to be saved, you only need to be sprinkled
with water."
-
"You have heard it said that for you to be saved, you only need to have
water poured over you."
-
"You have heard it said that for you to be saved, just come down to the
mourners' bench and pray through."
-
False teaching is often merely the INCOMPLETE teaching of the gospel. "You
have heard it said that for you to be saved, just call on the name of the
Lord." This is true as a part of the necessary obedience for salvation.
They have quoted the words of Jesus:
ACT 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call
on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
But Jesus has also stated that there is more to salvation,
MAT 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall
enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father
which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied
in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done
many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from
me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth
them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them
not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the
sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Doctrinal Errors
-
"You have heard it said that once you are saved, you are always saved."
Again, Jesus has already stated the answer to this false teaching:
JOH 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him,
If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
REV 2:10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer:
behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried;
and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and
I will give thee a crown of life.
Many who claim to believe the Bible, will bend over backwards to have
it agree with "science, so-called", as the apostle Paul referred to it.
Theistic evolution is one such accomodation.
-
"You have heard it said that evolution formed man over millions of years."
Jesus' answer to this false teaching is to affirm the reality of Adam and
Eve, the first man and woman created by God, from Moses' account of the
creation in Genesis chapters 1 and 2.
MAT 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read,
that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother,
and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
MAR 10:4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of
divorcement, and to put her away.
5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your
heart he wrote you this precept.
6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and
female.
7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave
to his wife;
Further, science so-called has claimed that there never was a flood
covering all of the earth, and theologians have flocked to local flood
theories to accomodate the popular view. The existance of Noah (or Noe,
KJV) is likewise denied.
-
Jesus' commentary on this error might be "You have heard it said that no
worldwide flood has ever occurred."
But He has already answered this falsification of history when he affirmed
the life of Noah and his ark, which was recorded by Moses in Genesis chapters
5 through 9:
MAT 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming
of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating
and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered
into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so
shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
LUK 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be
also in the days of the Son of man.
27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given
in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood
came, and destroyed them all.
Today many churches welcome homosexuals into their fellowship with no
teaching of repentance. There are clergy of denominations which are openly
practicing this perversion and abomination, to the approval of the members
and hierarchy.
-
"You have heard it said that homosexuality is an acceptable lifestyle."
Well, Jesus has already stated the answer to this false teaching by affirming
Moses' record of Sodom and Gomorrha, their past judgement, and their future
judgement:
MAT 10:14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your
words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of
your feet.
15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land
of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
MAT 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven,
shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been
done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this
day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land
of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
MAR 6:11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you,
when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony
against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom
and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.
LUK 10:10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive
you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do
wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom
of God is come nigh unto you.
12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day
for Sodom, than for that city.
LUK 17:28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they
did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and
brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
-
"You have heard it said that you should attend the church of your choice."
Jesus stated that he only built ONE CHURCH:
MAT 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and
upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not
prevail against it.
-
"You have heard it said that any denomination is as good as another if
one is sincere." Jesus prayed to the Father for unity; that is, for NOT
ONLY the apostles but also future believers -- THE CHURCH -- should be
one:
JOH 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which
shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in
thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that
thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they
may be one, even as we are one:
-
"You have heard it said that a Christian's life should be one of peace
and happiness, with no troubles."
Jesus contradicts that saying:
JOH 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me
ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of
good cheer; I have overcome the world.
MAT 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came
not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and
the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother
in law.
36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
LUK 12:51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth?
I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided,
three against two, and two against three.
53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against
the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the
mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter
in law against her mother in law.
-
"You have heard it said that there really is no Hell, only oblivion or
quietness in the grave."
Jesus rather refutes this saying:
MAT 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able
to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul
and body in hell.
Jesus describes the explicit plight of the departed lost soul by telling
the story of the beggar Lazarus and a certain unnamed rich man:
LUK 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed
in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid
at his gate, full of sores,
21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich
man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by
the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth
Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and
send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool
my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst
thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted,
and thou art tormented.
26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf
fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither
can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
Jesus spoke of Hell 16 times in the King James Version of the Word.
The other 7 references were two by doctor Luke quoting and explaining David's
Psalm 16:10, James, Peter, and 3 times by John in the Revelation.
Jesus Has Spoken
Jesus has spoken and His sayings have been recorded for our benefit.
HEB 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake
in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath
appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
MAT 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine,
and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house
upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
JOH 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love
me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come
unto him, and make our abode with him.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which
ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
JOH 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I
judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that
judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the
last day.
While we are hearing the words of Jesus, let us not go beyond them and
the words he gave to the apostles, adding in man's ideas:
LUK 9:30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which
were Moses and Elias:
31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should
accomplish at Jerusalem.
32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep:
and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood
with him.
33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto
Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles;
one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he
said.
34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them:
and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved
Son: hear him.
We know that the popular consensus of what everybody knows about the
Bible and salvation is the American Way, where the majority is supposed
to rule.
Jesus has the last word about the majority:
MAT 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate,
and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which
go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth
unto life, and few there be that find it. |
